After 12 days of thrilling action, 8 teams namely Angola, Burundi, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Mauritania, Namibia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe crashed out of the ongoing African Cup of Nations(AFCON) tournament in Egypt.
36 matches have been played so far across 6 groups. There have been 26 wins (equivalent to number of losses), 10 draws and 68 goals scored so far. Group A saw host Nation Egypt top the group with 9 points and Uganda qualify with 4 points whiles DR Congo also qualified as one of the best 3rd placed teams.
In Group B, underdogs and debutants Madagascar pulled a shock after beating Nigeria and topping the group as a result with 7 points. Group favorites Nigeria qualified in second place with 6 points and Guinea qualify with 4 points as one of the best 3rd placed teams. Group C saw Algeria and Senegal qualify with 9 and 6 points respectively.
South Africa qualified as the one of the best 3rd placed teams with 3 points, Morocco topped the group and qualified with 9 points and Ivory Coast came in second and qualified with 6 points.
In Group E, Mali qualified and topped the group with 7 points, Tunisia however after a series of underwhelming performances still managed to qualify with 3 points and came in second. The last Group however saw Ghana top the group with 5 points and Cameroon came in second with the same number of points and Benin qualified with 3 points filling the last spot of the 4 slots available for the best 3rd placed team.
The round of 16 starts on Friday 5th July and the last round matches will be played on Monday, 8th July.
