Members of the Arts and Tourism Writers Association of Ghana – ATWAG on Thursday, October 17, 2019 participated in the workshop on Culture Reporting and Journalism.
The Media Sensitization and Training Workshop was put together by the Ghana Culture Forum under the theme, Projecting Our National Culture – The Challenges and Opportunities for the Media Practitioners at the W.E.D. Du Bois Memorial Centre for Pan-African Culture in Accra.
The Dean of the School of Communication Studies at Wisconsin International University College, Prof. Kwame Karikari took participants through Culture Reporting – The Opportunities and Challenges for National Development.
Prof. Karikari in his speech recounted a statement made by Hugh Masakela. He said, one day, people will refer to Africans as “they used to be African” because of how culture has been marginalised in the development process.
He has therefore called for the reeducation on culture by taking advantage of media proliferation.
The Chief Executive of Heritage Development, Akunu Dake also took his turn on Integrating Culture in National Life – The Quest for Relevance and Excellence.
Participants were also trained on key actions and steps in mainstreaming culture in national development and the roles journalist and media practitioners should play in integrating culture in national development.
Special Guests of Honor at the Ghana Culture Forum on Media Sensitization and Training Workshop was the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Dr. Ziblim Iddi and the Deputy Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Paul Essien.
Nana Otuo Owoahene Acheampong, General Secretary of the Ghana Culture Forum in his opening speech stressed the need for capacity building in culture and ratified conventions.
The Ghana Culture Forum – GCF is a membership based civil society consultative forum. It is a network of cultural practitioners, activists and organizations united around a common vision of affirming the cultural foundations of development and enhancing the cultural sector.
The GCF serves as an umbrella body for its members and is bound by the principle of collective leadership and action which however does not exempt each of the members of their individual responsibility for specific functions or tasks.
