Camidoh has received multiple nominations at the 24th Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, officially known as the ’24th VGMAS’.
The nominees were unveiled during the nominees’ announcement ceremony held at the Grand Arena at the weekend in Accra. The sensational Ghanaian vocalist scored six (6) nominations, including the most coveted Artiste of the Year, where he will compete along with Black Sherif, Stonebwoy, Sarkodie, King Promise, Camidoh, KiDi, Piesie Esther, and Joe Mettle.
Camidoh’s nomination also include a ‘Vodafone Most Popular Song of the Year’, ‘International Collaboration of the Year’, ‘Best Afrobeats / Afropop Artiste of the Year’, ‘Best Male Vocal Performance of the Year’, and ‘Best Afrobeats Song of the Year’ all for his 2022’s commercially successful single, ‘Sugarcane’ remix, which features Nigerian singers Darkoo and Mayorkun, as well as Ghana’s King Promise.
Camidoh is acclaimed as the leading light of Ghana’s new Afropop movement, splicing his sweet R&B/Afrobeat fusion with lyrics that leap between English and his native language of Ewe. He first gained mainstream recognition in late 2018 with his DarkoVibes-assisted single “For My Lover’. He made significant career progress following the release of 2021’s ‘Sugarcane’, which went viral. In 2022, a star-studded remix featuring Mayorkun, King Promise, and Darkoo gave him even more exposure in Africa and beyond.
He recently became the fourth Ghanaian artist to join Boomplay’s Golden Club after amassing over 100 million streams on the music streaming and discovery platforms. He is looking likely to be busy all year: he has his next run of singles recorded, is about to hit the road playing shows, and is cooking up his debut album.
Produced by CharterHouse Ghana Limited and sponsored by telecommunication giants, Vodafone Ghana, the VGMAs scheme is recognized as the nation’s preeminent multicultural and music awards show from a Ghanaian perspective.
This year’s presentation ceremony will celebrate the outstanding achievements and performances of creatives across more than 30 competitive categories, spanning reggae and dancehall artist of the year, highlife artist of the year, hip hop artist of the year, vocalist of the year, and more. This year’s event is slated for a one-night experience on Saturday (May 13) at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre and will air live on TV3 and other affiliate media houses.
