Nigerian Afrobeats singer and producer Pheelz’s song ‘Finesse’, featuring fellow countryman Bnxn, could feature on the FIFA 23 video game due out on 27 September.
On 30 August, media outlets reported an accidental leakage of the game on Xbox allowing brief access to players a month before the official release date.
The glitch, which seems to have led to the leaking of several features of the game, is how users discovered ‘Finesse’ as one of its soundtracks. A number of players also shared playlists of the songs found in the game on various streaming platforms, with ‘Finesse’ among them.
Boasting an anthemic hook and celebrating the happy-go-lucky lifestyle, ‘Finesse’ was released to global acclaim in March, peaking at No.1 on the global Shazam charts. The record also spent 13 weeks on the UK Afrobeats Chart, where it also peaked at No.1.
In 2020, fellow Nigerian artist Fireboy DML’s 2019 single ‘Scatter’ was listed among the official tracks for EA Sports’ FIFA 21 football simulation video game. Songs by other Nigerian acts like Rema and Burna Boy have also featured in the game’s soundtrack in previous years. Somali-born rapper K’naan and Ghana’s Rocky Dawuni are among other African acts whose music has previously appeared on the game.
FIFA 23 will be the last of the video gaming series after EA and FIFA ended their partnership. Moving forward, the franchise will run under the title, EA Sports FC.
