After a successful debut last November, the hip hop festival is coming back, between the 9th and the 13th of October 2019, with a specific focus on dance. This is in line with yoyo tinz’ mission to draw attention to the often underrepresented elements of the hip hop culture.
The 2019 festival poster is a nod to the theme: the now recognizable GOAT mascot imagined by Ghanaian artist Bright Ackwerh returns, captured in the middle of a break-dancing move. The mascot is also seen wearing an iconic Black Stars jersey of the legendary Abedi Pele – another nod to the GOAT – Greatest of All Times – allusions.
Yoyo tinz’s decision to host the festival on Terra Alta’s grounds for this edition of the festival is befitting as the organization is home to Accra Theatre Workshop; an initiative with dance as one of it’s primary artistic interests. Terra Alta founder, Elizabeth Sutherland, commented on the aptness of this collaboration, saying; “We love what yoyo tinz has been doing, and we’re happy to support this year’s festival. Terra Alta is all about providing space to artists who are committed to their form and this team does exactly that.”
On the decision to focus on dance this year, yoyo tinz founder and creative director, Selorm Jay, said: “When people hear the words ‘hip hop’ they immediately think rap music and not the other art forms of the culture. In order for us to educate and shine a light on the other elements of hip hop, we will focus each year’s festival on a relevant discipline within the culture, while still celebrating our love for all things hip hop on a smaller scale. This year our focus will be on dance. Selorm Jay added: “Hip hop englobes a wide variety of elements and we look forward to presenting this to fans and curious minds in this year and the years that follow.”
This edition of the festival will feature several dance-focused activities, a photographic exhibition on Wednesday 9th October, an evening of short movies screenings and panel discussions on Thursday 10th, a special screening of Coz Ov Moni Friday 11th.Saturday (12th) and Sunday (13th) will be jam-packed with graffiti, kids area, video games, skateboarding, dance showcases, dance classes, and some musical performances, much like last year.
This second edition of yoyo tinz festival is being put together with the help and partnership of Institut Français Ghana, RPC, Alliance Française Accra, YFM, Visiter l’Afrique, Yobbings, Fokn Bois, Afrodistrict, and Terra Alta.
