Nigerian pop singer Omah Lay today released the music video for his new single ‘Understand’, which is available on all major streaming platforms.
The project was shot in Ghana and directed by Top Shotta. It opens with a tense exchange, which finds an unarmed Omah Lay surrounded by men with machetes, knives and bats. The clip flits between romantic moments to the aftermath of a melee as he confidently walks through the fray.
Since its release earlier this month, ‘Understand’, which is Omah Lay’s maiden 2021 offer and marks his reunion with ‘Godly’ producer Tempoe, has amassed more than 10 million global streams.
“Sharing my art with people that truly love and support me,” the singer tweeted ahead of the release. “I’ve missed this so much!”
Omah Lay’s sound is characterised by a unique Afro-fusion style that is inspired by traditional music, percussion-led highlife, classic rap and Afrobeats.
In February, he was selected alongside Gambian-British rapper Pa Salieu for the Montreux Jazz Festival Spotlight initiative. In the same month, at the 14th Headies, he won the Next Rated Award ahead of fellow Nigerian acts Tems, Oxlade and Bella Shmurda. The singer recently featured on the Masterkraft remix of Justin Bieber’s chart-topping ‘Peaches’.
