The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed that President Mahama has been selected as African Union champion for reparations.
The Minister made the revelation during his speech at the official media launch of the upcoming Diaspora Summit held on Wednesday, 17 September 2025. Held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the event was graced by the presence of high diplomats, government officials, and the media.
Speaking at the launch, Hon. Ablakwa stated that the African Union has declared the period between 2026 and 2036 to be Africa’s Decade of Reparations.
He clarified that Ghana is leading initiatives to advance justice and empowerment for Africa and its descendants under President Mahama’s direction as the African Union Champion for Reparations.
“Reparations for Africa does not only mean justice for colonial and neo-colonial suppression. It is also a call for Africa and its descendants to build their own. We can only build when we connect our energies and collaborate to achieve economic liberation,” he said.
The Diaspora Summit is scheduled to take off on the 19th and 20th of December 2025 at the Accra International Conference Center.
