Tiwa Savage Reveals Why She Initially Disliked Mavin Hit ‘Dorobucci’

Tiwa Savage, the queen of Afrobeats, has disclosed that when she first heard Dorobucci, the number one song of Mavin Records, she didn’t like it.

Tiwa Savage recounted in a recent interview with NotJustOk that during their time in Dubai for her wedding, producer Don Jazzy had played the song’s opening instrumental for her. She didn’t know it was a Mavin initiative at the time, and she felt it sounded awful in private.

“I don’t know if people know this, but Don Jazzy was playing the beat in our hotel during my wedding in Dubai. I didn’t want to tell him, but I thought it was such a terrible song,” Tiwa admitted.

Don Jazzy encouraged her to go back to Nigeria to work on what he called a significant new album shortly after the wedding. Tiwa finally travelled back and joined her labelmates in the studio, despite her intention to stay on her honeymoon.

The tune had changed, much to her amazement. The polished Dorobucci sounded completely different from the rough version she had heard previously, she recalled, adding, “I was shocked when I got back and heard the final version.”

Tiwa, who became the final Mavin artist to record her verse, said that she was still doubtful. Everyone else’s parts had already been recorded. “I just looked at them and thought, ‘Do you guys really like this?'” she laughed.

It’s interesting to note that Tiwa had previously undervalued one of her singles. She revealed that when she first recorded Eminado, she didn’t enjoy it either. Later, both songs would become huge hits that dominated charts in Africa and other countries.

Reflecting on the experience, Tiwa Savage praised Don Jazzy’s creative genius and vision, acknowledging how Dorobucci became a cultural anthem despite her early doubts. “We all know what happened to that record,” she said. “Don Jazzy just has that magic touch. I didn’t even know I’d end up on the song, but it turned out to be phenomenal.”
