Three Nigerian artistes, Burna Boy, Rema, and Tems, took turns on stage to anchor afrobeats-themed performances at the 2023 NBA All-Star Game halftime show yesterday (February 19).
Burna Boy opened with a spirited rendition of some of his classics, including “It’s Plenty,” “Last Last,” and “Alone,” before Rema took the stage to play “Calm Down” and “Holiday.” Tems performed a medley of “Crazy Tings,” “Free Mind,” “Essence,” and “Higher” while surrounded by backing dancers to end the section.
Post Malone played his songs “Wow” and “Rockstar” for a gathering of fans prior to tip-off at tonight’s All-Star Game. He enlisted 21 Savage, who is on the song’s original studio version, for the latter tune.
Tems just won her first Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance for the Future and Drake song “Wait for U.” For her work on Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up,” which is featured on the soundtrack for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, she has been nominated for the 2023 Academy Award for Best Original Song.
In January 2022, Rema made an appearance on the Caprisongs song “Jealousy” by FKA twigs; in April, he released his debut album Rave & Roses. Love, Damini, Burna Boy’s final album, was released that summer.
