The historic town of Abotakyi in the Akuapem Traditional Area came alive on October 17, 2025, as William Du Bois Yaw Sakyi Kumi was officially enstooled as Nana Yaw Sakyi I, the first-ever Apesemakahene of Abotakyi Akuapem.
The ceremony, held under the auspices of the Omanhene of Abotakyi Akuapem, Nana Okyekyerekuro Kwame Sakyi Ababio II, who also serves as the Asesawhene of the Akuapem Traditional Area, drew traditional leaders, corporate executives, artists, and well-wishers from across Ghana and the diaspora.

Nana Yaw Sakyi I hails from the royal Kumi Sakyi family of Abotakyi Akuapem. He is the son of the late Jonathan Kwame Kumi and the late Comfort Oheneasi Awuku, and grandson of the late Clement Yaw Sakyi and Madam Mercy Amene Sakyi.
He holds a degree in Communication Studies from the Ghana Institute of Journalism and a Master’s degree in Brands and Communication Management from the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). Professionally, he serves as a Senior Account Manager at Interactive Digital, part of the Ninani Group, where he leads strategic communication efforts for some of Ghana’s leading brands.
Beyond his corporate achievements, Nana Yaw Sakyi I is an Adinkra ring collector and seller at Statements Art Enterprise, a brand rooted in African symbolism and craftsmanship. He is also an acclaimed spoken word artist, celebrated for his cultural storytelling and advocacy through performances on local television platforms and internationally on the BBC.
The Apesemakahene stool, newly established under the guidance of Nana Okyekyerekuro Kwame Sakyi Ababio II, serves as a bridge between the palace and the public, a role dedicated to communication, development, and cultural diplomacy.
The enstoolment ceremony began with sacred rites in Accra. It culminated in a vibrant durbar at the Abotakyi Chief’s Palace, where the new chief was presented to the elders and people. The occasion merged rich Akuapem customs with modern Ghanaian expression, reflecting the dual essence of tradition and progress.
Corporate brands, including Stanbic Bank and Twellium Ghana Limited, paid homage and extended their support to the new chief, reaffirming their partnership in promoting community development and cultural heritage.
About Abotakyi Akuapem
Abotakyi is one of the most historically significant towns in the Akuapem Traditional Area. It holds a special place in Ghana’s history as the site of the Abotakyi Accord of 1733. This historic agreement united the Guan, Kyerepong, Larteh, and Akan groups under one paramountcy, leading to the formation of the Akuapem State. This accord laid the foundation for unity, governance, and peace among the Akuapem people, and Abotakyi remains a symbol of dialogue, reconciliation, and leadership.
In his remarks, Nana Yaw Sakyi I expressed deep gratitude to the Omanhene, elders, family, and sponsors for their trust and support, pledging to serve Abotakyi with integrity, creativity, and compassion.
“This stool is not just an honour; it is a sacred responsibility. I believe culture and creativity can transform communities, and I am committed to working with our people, especially the youth, to build a stronger Abotakyi,” he said.
The enthronement of Nana Yaw Sakyi I as the first Apesemakahene of Abotakyi Akuapem signals a renewed era of leadership, one that blends tradition, creativity, and strategic communication to drive cultural and social progress.
