Leading member of the ruling New Patriotic Party ( NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere Darko has opined that member of Parliament for North Tongu, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa is labouring under a hopelessly weighty misconception that Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori- Atta shouldn’t have been approved.
Gabby Otchere was reacting to the member Of Parliament’s resignation from Parliament’s Appointments Committee.
Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa ok yesterday 31st March 2021 resigned from the 8th Parliament’s Appointments Committee after Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin had accepted his resignation.
Hon. Ablakwa earlier on Tuesday 30th March wrote to the Speaker, conveying to him his decision to discontinue his membership of the 8th Parliament’s Appointments Committee after days of thoughtful reflection and careful considerations.
” I shall like to state the reasons for this difficult decision are both personal and on principle.
Respectfully, do take note that my resignation is with immidiate effect and therefore, I shall not be available for the vetting of nominees for Deputy Ministerial positions” The MP wrote in his letter.
However, the vociferous member of the ruling New Patriotic Party ( NPP) reacting to the North Tongu MP’s resignation, using him in an illustration to make a point in a Facebook post, held the view that when he had his chance to ask Ofori Atta, then Finance Minister Designate questions at his vetting, came out with a question on the growth in assets of Mfund of Databank which Ken Ofori- Atta became it’s CEO in 2017, from a value of GHS 269 million in 2016 to GHS 805 million in 2020.
Gabby stressed out in his statement that Honorable Ablakwa thought his question was a ” killer” or better still difficult question.
According to him, the North Tongu MP and immidiate former member of Parliament’s Appointments Committee highlighted and stressed in his question to the then Minister Designate the growth in the assets of Mfund of Databank took place when the founder became Finance Minister from 2017 to 2020.
President Akufo-Addo’s somehow right hand side man further noted that the way Mr Ablakwa carefully phrased and delivered his question was deadly and appeared to have badly exposed Mr Ofori- Atta.
” But, did it?” Gabby quizzed in his statement.
” The question was designed to buttress the wrong perception craftily pushed by the NDC over the years that Ken uses his ministerial position to promote the interest of his private business. Mr Ablakwa’s question was tailored to show evidence why the retired investment banker’s nomination should not be approved” Part of Gabby Otchere’s statement read.
