A host of former Black Stars players were present at the annual ‘El Clasico’ viewing experience which took place at the Garage Lounge and Bar in Accra last Sunday.
The event was organised by the Spanish Embassy in Ghana to celebrate Spanish football during La Liga’s biggest game of the season between giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Former Black Stars skipper, Asamoah Gyan, and teammates Derek Boateng, Kwadwo Asamoah, and Isaac Vorsah took part in the first-round encounter which saw Madrid win 3-1 at home.
Addressing patrons after the clash, Gyan, who was disappointed at Barcelona’s defeat, called on the football authorities in Ghana to consider partnering with Spanish clubs to develop the game.
“It was a very competitive game between the two most successful Spanish clubs and it is always fun to watch them play.
“I am not happy that Barcelona lost but I believe they would come back stronger in the second leg. It will also be interesting to have football officials in Ghana partner with Spanish clubs to help develop our game,” Gyan said.
For his part, the Spanish Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Javier Gutiérrez, was glad at the popularity of his country’s league in the country and expressed the hope that Real Madrid and Barcelona would continue to make Spain proud globally.
“I am very happy at the way Ghanaians adore Spanish football and I believe it is just going to be better going forward,” he said.
