Black Sherif was announced Artiste of the Year at the 2023 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) which was held at the weekend from the Grand Arena, Accra International Conference Centre.
The Ghana rap sensation headed into the ceremony with 15 nominations. He swept 5 awards including Best Hip Hop Song, Collaboration of the Year, Best Music Video, Most Popular Song of the Year and the ultimate award on the night Artiste of the Year, besting the category’s contenders such as Stonebwoy, Camidoh, King Promise, Joe Mettle, Piesie Esther and KiDi.
Elsewhere, Camidoh also claimed two victories out 6 nominations. His 2022 “Sugarcane” Remix, which features Darkoo, Mayorkun and King Promise, was adjudged Best International Collaboration and Best Afrobeats Song. After several years and nominations, King Promise finally won his first major VGMA awards for his 2022’s “5 Star” album and was crowned the Best Afrobeats Artiste.
Stonebwoy won the VGMA for the coveted “Best Reggae & Dancehall Artiste” of the year, making him the most decorated artist in the category with a total of 7 wins. He claimed victory over Ras Kuuku, Epixode, Rocky Dawuni, and Samini. His 2022 afropop single “Therapy” also won the VGMA for “Best Afropop Song” of the year.
Sarkodie, Piesie Esther, Lasmid, Gyakie, Perez Muzik, Epixode were all winners on the big night. The ceremony, now in its 24th edition, honors outstanding artistic achievements in a variety of musical genres, including highlife, hiplife, Afropop, and gospel.
