Afro-Pop Star, Wiyaala Secures Nomination At GACA.

GREATER ACCRA, GHANA – Ghanaian Afro pop singer-songwriter, Noella Wiyaala, popularly christened Wiyaala has been nominated in the category of “Ghanaian Artiste of the Year” at the maiden instalment of Ghana Arts and Culture Awards (GACA) ceremony slated for 23rd November, 2019, and will be staged at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).

Ghana Arts and Culture Awards seeks to honour and appreciate the forerunners, brands and the current key players who have contributed greatly to the Arts and Culture Industry here in Ghana and beyond. This awards scheme will be based on selection of individuals who will be filing for nomination.

Earlier at the launch where the award plaques were unveiled, Executive Director of National Commission on Culture, Mrs. Edna Janet Nyame said the awards scheme was in line with her outfit’s mandate of promoting Ghanaian cultural heritage and recognizing excellence. For her, in an era where western influence has dominated the local culture and has the youth forgetting all about Ghanaian values, GACA could not have come at a better time.

According to her, it was the obligation of NCC to help redeem the situation by promoting and preserving the Ghanaian cultural identity, hence the NCC’s partnership with an event which recognised art and culture as a valuable assert of the country.

Nineteen award categories are up for grabs including; Art Festival of the Year, Traditional Music Group of the Year, Cultural Television Programme of the Year, Ghanaian Visual Artist of the Year and Cultural Heritage Entrepreneur of the Year, among others. Also included in the categories are honorary awards.

Wiyaala means ‘the doer’ in the Sissala dialect. She sings in her native language Sissala and Waala dialects spiced up with the English Language. She has attained public renown with her single “Make Me Dance” and her androgynous image. After making her name in reality shows in Accra, she established a solo career in 2013 with the hit single “Rock My Body”, which won her two awards at the 2014 first edition of the All Africa Music Awards, the Most Promising Artiste in Africa and Revelation of The African Continent.

Wiyaala is also associated with UNICEF Ghana and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection of Ghana in campaigns against child marriage, child poverty, health and sanitation. She headlined the 15th London African Music Festival in London.
