The memorial and funeral service for AKA will take place this weekend, the late South African rapper’s family announced.
The announcement comes just days after the renowned rapper was shot dead outside Wish Restaurant in the coastal city of Durban, along with his close friend, the chef and entrepreneur Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane. Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the rapper and his friend were walking to their car when they were approached by two armed men who shot them at close range.
The late rapper, born Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, will be honored by his family and friends in Sandton, South Africa, at the Sandton Convention Center on Friday (February 17). He will later be laid to rest in a private provincial funeral on Saturday, February 18, at an undisclosed venue. The ceremony will be limited to ticket holders and will be streamed live at 15:00 on the musician’s YouTube channel.
“It is our wish to celebrate the life of Kiernan with those he touched and impacted throughout his gift of music,” the Forbes family wrote in a statement. “We would like to acknowledge the outpouring of love we have received over the past few days. “Kiernan wasn’t just loved by us as a family, but by the nation, loved ones, friends, industry colleagues, and media tributes.”
South African hip hop artist AKA, also known as the Supa Mega, has spent the last ten years pushing the boundaries in the African hip hop scene with a series of killer albums and singles such as Sweet Fire, All Eyes On Me, Fela in Versace, Jike, and many more.
