South Africa-based Zimbabwean singer Shasha has been featured by Apple Music as part of the streaming platform’s New Artist Spotlight series.
The announcement comes after the release of Shasha’s debut EP titled Blossom. The eight-track EP is currently number one on the Apple Music Album charts and will be featured in South Africa and across the rest of the continent. The EP is a fusion of Afrobeats, pop, soul and amapiano and features such songs as ‘Abondaba’ featuring Samthing Soweto, ‘You’, ‘Water’, ‘Emazulwini’ and ‘Mutare’.
“This EP showcases the versatility of my voice and touches on different themes,” Shasha said. “Something About You’ and ‘Sing It Back’ are covers of songs I liked growing up. I added an amapiano flavour just for the season and I love how they came out.”
Commenting about her career, Sha Sha said: “I wanted to be a nurse, actually. I used to sing in choir at school but I never thought that it would be my career.”
On Blossom, reads a press release, “Sha Sha provides a summer soundtrack which celebrates life’s festivities and explores ideas of love and women’s empowerment. Assisted by production duo Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa as well as Samthing Soweto – who previously featured the artist on his number 1 smash hit ‘Akulaleki’ – Sha Sha displays her songwriting abilities as well as her alluring vocals.
“Much like paying homage to her hometown and the organic celebration of her Shona heritage on the rhythmic ‘Mutare’, Sha Sha revisits her childhood by re-imagining house classics by Lorayne and Moloko. These reworks sum up Sha Sha’s sonic appeal perfectly, her ability to apply the absorptive qualities of vocal house to the trending sounds of today.”
Previous South African artists who have benefited on Apple’s New Artist Spotlight platform include Ami Faku, Sio, Elizée and Malachi, Sho Madjozi, Simmy, Dope Saint Jude, Darkie Fiction, Dutchkid, Emerger and Thandi Ntuli.
