The winners of the 2023 NAACP Image Awards were announced at a presentation ceremony that was broadcast live from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California on February 25.
“Essence” singers Tems and Wizkid won outstanding individual accolades following a landmark year that saw them score multiple coveted honors and sell-out shows, including a 2021 NAACP Image Awards Outstanding International Song Award for their work on “Essence,” as well as Tems’ record-setting GRAMMY award win earlier and Wizkid’s sold-out show at the iconic Madison Square Garden (MSG).
At this year’s ceremony, hosted by Queen Latifah, Tems won the Outstanding International Song Award over Wizkid, Fireboy DML, Chris Brown, Burna Boy, and Davido for her performance of “No Woman, No Cry” for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, while Wizkid’s victory came courtesy of Chris Brown’s “Call Me Every Day,” on which the Nigerian musician features, beating songs by Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and Burna Boy.
The awards honor outstanding representations and achievements of people of color in music, motion pictures, television, and literature during the previous calendar year.
