Jennifer Lopez Starring in Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Atlas’ for Netflix

Portrait of Jennifer Lopez shot by Michael Buckner for Variety at the Palm Springs Convention Center during the Palm Springs International Film Festival on January 2, 2020.

Jennifer Lopez is humanity’s last hope.

Well, at least that’s the premise of “Atlas,” a sci-fi thriller set to star the “Jenny From the Block” singer and “Hustlers” actress. Brad Peyton, who orchestrated on-screen carnage in “Rampage” and “San Andreas,” will direct the film. “Atlas” unfolds in a bleak-sounding future where an AI soldier has determined the only way to end war is to end humanity. Obviously, this extremist approach to achieving a pacifist paradise doesn’t go down so well with Lopez, who finds herself teaming up with, as the official logline puts it: “the one thing she fears most — another AI.” Dun dun dun!

“Having the chance to direct Jennifer in the title role of this movie is a dream come true, as I know she’ll bring the incredible strength, depth and authenticity we’ve all come to admire from her work,” Peyton said. https://91325a316ff1af019351134061b582c4.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-38/html/container.html

The film is the latest project to originate from Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions’ first-look deal with Netflix. As part of the pact, Lopez, producing partner Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and longtime manager Benny Medina will create a slate of films, television series, scripted and unscripted content, with an emphasis on projects that support diverse female actors, writers and filmmakers. The first two announced projects both star Lopez and include “The Mother,” which is directed by Niki Caro and “The Cipher,” based on the novel by Isabella Maldonado.

Aron Eli Coleite is writing the most recent draft of a script penned by Leo Sardarian. Producers include Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures, Peyton and Jeff Fierson for ASAP Entertainment; Lopez, Goldsmith-Thomas, and Medina for Nuyorican Productions

Deadline first reported the deal for “Atlas.”
