I was at the La Palm Hotel Gardens on Sunday night for King Promise’s PROMISE LAND and it was better than I imagined. After my experience at the LivespotX Festival, I went to the event with little expectations, just to work and get content for Ameyaw TV.
The event was well attended, sold out I would say, for the capacity of the garden as it was set up. The entrance to the main space was set up with photos of King Promise and served as a cool spot for taking photos.
An interesting observation was that the crowd was well behaved and mannered, in fact, it was a gathering for the ‘cool kids’ of Accra and those who visited for holidays from the UK, US, Canada, Germany and Israel.
While we waited for Mr Eazi and his friends to come on stage, party songs from DJ Juls, Dj KCrack and MC El Baby kept us entertained.
Like all Ghanaian shows, the program which was billed to start at 7 pm, saw the rising UK based singer, Tracy Selasi take the stage at 10 pm. She rocked the crowd with her killer dance moves. Other upcoming musicians like Ofei, Camidoh and many others set the pace for the night.
After almost 30mins of performances, there was nearly an hour’s interlude of DJ’s smiling rag-tag popular hits of all genres. The anxiously waiting crowded started to get restless!
Singer Efya came on at 11:35 and galvanized the crowd with a massive sing-along to her 2019 hit songs including ‘Saara’.
Finally, it was time for the king of the land to shine. Slender and with his signature bald head and big ‘camboo’, King Promise finally burst onto the scene at 12 am – 5 hours after the show started, singing what is perhaps his most popular hit “Oh Yeah”. His high energy was endearing and he launched into a rousing rendition of many of his biggest hits helped along by the crowd. It is obvious that at this time Afro-trap is more of a studio genre than live performance art, and only two DJs and a few dancers accompanied King Promise.
He is still to learn the nuances of live performance but that will surely come; for the time being his irrepressible energy and the sheer number of hits he has under his belt are almost enough to carry the show.
What came next was unexpected: the show became a parade of King Promise’s friends, collaborators and mentors who each sang one or two tunes while the star of the night thanked them and largely jammed along like an MC.
From Medikal, Joey B, La Meme Gang, Kidi, UK based acts, Kojo Funds, Eugy Official, Kwamz and Flava who brought out popular Ghanaian dancers, Incredible Zigi, Dancegod Lloyd to perform a choreographed piece to their hit show ‘Shoo’
Of course, it was nice to see the Maestro Kojo Antwi come out and perform their song ‘Bra’, Mr Eazi vibing with his arm around Promise as the crowd went crazy, or Sarkodie who gave a spectacular performance of their song ‘Can’t Let You Go’.
Music duo, R2bees were the only acts billed to perform that failed to show up because they were out of the country.
The Promise Land 2019 finally came to an end at 1am with King Promise thanking his fans for supporting his album ‘AS PROMISED’. He had spent one hour on stage, a gift for the fans, and a star studded way of partying away 2019 and promised to make Promise Land 2020 bigger and better.
Apart from the delays and a quick end to the show, the organizers did a great job on the set up for the VIP and the VVIP areas. Security was spot on and the media had enough space to move around.
