Rayvanny has become the first African artist to be nominated for the prestigious Spanish entertainment awards, Premios Juventud.
Premios Juventud is an award show celebrating the trendiest artists in Latin entertainment, with 31 awards set to be handed out to music stars, actors and fashionistas. Winners are determined by an online vote at univision.com.
This year’s awards gala is scheduled to go down at the Coliseo José Miguel Agrelot in Puerto Rico on 21 July.
The bongo flava singer got the nod for the 2022 awards after his song ‘Mama Tetema’, featuring Colombian artist Maluma, received wide acclaim in the Spanish-speaking world.
The song, released in November 2021, has become an unexpected hit, topping international charts. In January it hit number one on Mexico Airplay, a weekly record chart first published by Billboard in 2011 for singles receiving the most airplay in Mexico. It was also number five on Mexico Espanol Airplay, number 18 on Latin Rhythm Airplay and position 41 on Latin Airplay.
Rayvanny took to Instagram to share the news, expressing delight at being recognised internationally.
The artist, who heads Next Level Music label, was also the first African act to perform at the MTV Europe Music Awards during this year’s event at Papp László Budapest Sportaréna in Budapest, Hungary.
