In reality, monsters exist and we create them; then fear them for what they are, and try to tame them. When we fail to cage them, we look up to a hero, but sometimes the world does not need another hero, what it needs is a real monster. For many years, it’s been alleged there’s a cabal that manipulates the Ghanaian entertainment system to their benefit, leaving musicians to wallow in poverty.
The cabal is accused of using Ghanaian musicians to make profits while not compensating them fairly. The populace needed a hero to save them from oppression, not just anyone, but “a real hero that will remain accountable until the end”. After enduring ten years of suppression, one man who won’t “hesitate to defy the status, challenge norms and stand up to authority” fought against the system to free himself from repression, paving way for many others to do the same.
Unfortunately, he’s probably the most hated artiste in Ghana’s music industry, nevertheless, he is gifted, valiant and not afraid to wage war against the system or any artiste he considers as a threat to his ambitions. This persona is none other than the infamous dance-hall maestro, Shatta Wale. Observably, the brand Shatta Wale does not appeal to most of the Ghanaian media houses as well as promoters due to his “rogue” nature – his raw and uncut lyrical content, smutty character, excessive desire for musical beefs, being too outspoken, amongst others.
All the same, he’s a musical genius, confident, goes against the odds every time but continues to reign and dominates charts. Evidently, the success of Shatta Wale relies on his fan army, The Shatta Movement Family – a movement ridiculed to be made up of illiterates, junkies, and street mongers, which is entirely false. Shatta Movement consists of everyone who loves his music, from the streets, to the corporate world, they are everywhere. Truly, Shatta Wale has established a strong relationship with his fan base, particularly the ghetto world – He motivates them, understands their struggles, speaks for them and they adore him for that. In fact, the Shatta Movement is the heartbeat of Shatta Wale, when it stops beating, it’s the end of the road for him.
There’s been several attempts to bury his career, however, it seems the more people try to put him down, he turns into a real monster that annihilates anyone in his path. The big question now is…who’s capable of decapitating the monster the industry has created? Well, until the man who wields the “Valyrian blade” arrives, Shatta Wale continues to be a menace to the industry. (Flash Africa)
