Shenseea becomes the first woman to win “Best Reggae Act” at the MOBO Awards

Shenseea won the award for Best Reggae Act at the British Music of Black Origin (MOBO) Awards, held at the Coventry Building Society Arena in London, England, on Sunday.

The announcement was made on MOBO’s official Instagram page, and Shenseea responded with a mixture of emojis and a post on Instagram. “I won a MOBO Award,” she posted. “Thank you to all who voted.” A MOBO Awards specialist committee selects the winner of this category.

The other nominees in the category were Skillibeng, Popcaan, Sean Paul, Spice and Lila Ike. Buju Banton copped the title at last year’s awards.

In the Best International Act category, Skillibeng was the only Jamaican act listed among nominees, including Megan Thee Stallion, Drake, Doja Cat, Ye, Lil Nas X, Polo G, WizKid and Young Stoner Life. The award, determined by public vote, went to WizKid. The feat has officially made him the Nigerian act with the most MOBO wins in history. He also walked away with the award for Best African Act.

The MOBO Awards returned in 2020 after a two-year hiatus. At the 2017 ceremony, Damian Marley copped the award for Best Reggae Artiste. Popcaan won the award in 2016 and 2015.

The ceremony is lauded as the UK’s biggest celebration of black music and culture.
