Transfer: Andre Onana Joins Trabzonspor from Manchester United

On Friday, Manchester United announced that keeper Andre Onana had finished a season-long loan to Turkish powerhouse Trabzonspor.

The 29-year-old professional football player from Cameroon, who joined United from Inter Milan in 2023 for an initial €51 million plus add-ons, is leaving Old Trafford following a difficult period characterised by costly mistakes and inconsistency.

Onana joined United as a replacement for veteran custodian David de Gea but found it difficult to adapt to life in England.

Even though he helped United win the FA Cup in his first season, his performances were frequently critiqued, especially in Europe when his dependability was called into doubt due to high-profile mistakes.

Similar circumstances greeted his second season, as a hamstring ailment kept him out of preseason and a mistake in his opening game led to United’s unexpected Carabao Cup loss to Grimsby Town.

Onana’s move to Trabzonspor was made possible by the deadline-day acquisition of Belgian custodian Senne Lammens from Antwerp for €21 million plus add-ons, which moved him further down the hierarchy.

Confirming the deal, United said: “André Onana has joined Trabzonspor on loan for the duration of the 2025/26 season, subject to international clearance and registration. The move has been completed ahead of the Turkish transfer window closing on Friday. We would like to wish André good luck.”
