UEFA, the organisation that oversees football in Europe, has declared that Warsaw will host the women’s Champions League final in 2027, while Atletico Madrid will host the men’s final.
After AC Milan’s San Siro was denied the opportunity to host the men’s showpiece, the 70,000-seat Estadio Metropolitano—home of Atletico Madrid—was chosen.
In addition to discussing petitions from the football associations of Italy and Spain to play domestic league matches overseas, the decision was made on Thursday, September 11, 2025, in Tirana, Albania, however it could not reach a consensus.
The statement released from UEFA read thus;
“The committee acknowledged it as an important and growing issue but expressed the desire to ensure that it has the views of all stakeholders before coming to a final decision. There are many issues to resolve, and as the European governing body, UEFA has a responsibility to take all such factors into account. As a result, no decision was taken today, but UEFA will undertake a round of consultation with all stakeholders in European football, including fans.”
The match will now take place in the Spanish capital after Uefa decided to reopen bidding for the event due to concerns about plans for renovations at the San Siro. Liverpool defeated Tottenham in the 2019 Champions League final, the last time the Estadio Metropolitano hosted the event. Additionally, UEFA declared that Salzburg, Austria, will host the 2026 Super Cup match.
Additionally, the executive committee agreed a change to the rules governing the 2025–26 UEFA club competitions that will allow clubs to temporarily substitute one outfield player with a chronic sickness or injury in their squads up until matchday six of the league phase.
Uefa said,
“The reasoning for the adaptation is to ensure that squad lists are not unfairly reduced and players are safeguarded from additional workload pressure.”
However, a date has not been picked for the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League final.
