Wouter Kellerman, Zakes Bantwini and Nomcebo Zikode wins Grammy for Best Global Music Performance

South African artists Nomcebo Zikode, Zakes Bantwini and Wouter Kellerman scored a win at the 65th Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles on 5 February.

The three were named the winners of the Best Global Music Performance category for their collaboration on the song ‘Bayethe’.

This is the second Grammy for Kellerman after his win at the 57th awards for his 2014 album Winds of Samsara, a collaboration with Indian composer and producer Ricky Kej.

Zikode, 38, is best known for the monster hit ‘Jerusalema’ produced by Master KG, which sparked a global dance craze in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, while Bantwini is a renowned singer, record producer and businessman.

It was also a good night for Tems who scooped her first Grammy in the Best Melodic Rap Performance category for her appearance on Future’s ‘Wait for U’ featuring Drake. The Nigerian singer had also received nominations for Best Rap Song and Album of the Year – the latter for her contribution on Beyoncé’s Renaissance album.

At the same time, previous winners Burna Boy and Angélique Kidjo failed to secure a victory in the Best World Music Album category. The award went to 44-year-old Japanese musician Masa Takumi for Sakura, his fifth full-length solo album released last September. A win for Kidjo would have been a record sixth for an African artist.

This year’s Album of the Year went to British singer Harry Style for Harry’s House, while Beyoncé became the biggest winner in Grammy history after collecting her 32nd trophy.
