Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed that the government of Ghana will be “fully involved” in the burial of Christian Atsu.
The 31-year-old Ghanaian international football star who played in the English Premier League was found dead under earthquake rubble in Turkey; his agent confirmed the soccer player’s death on Saturday morning. Atsu had been missing since Feb. 6, when the massive earthquake ravaged his apartment building in the country’s Hatay province.
The Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, made the announcement while leading a government delegation to receive the footballer’s mortal remains, which arrived in Ghana from Turkiye on Sunday evening. “The state will be fully involved with the family in providing Atsu a befitting burial,” he said at the brief ceremony.
Dr Bawumia stated that the entire nation was saddened by the devastating earthquake in Turkiye, which claimed the life of the Hatayspor forward, and that they had prayed for the 31-year-old player to be found alive, but that “when he was found 12 days later, he was no more.” He extended the condolences of the government and people of Ghana to the bereaved family, describing Atsu’s death as a painful loss.
