Ghana’s Baaba J is Spotify EQUAL Africa artist for April

Ghanaian singer Baaba J has been announced as Spotify EQUAL Africa artist for April.

”I feel deeply honored by Spotify / Spotify Africa to be named Equal artist for the month of April. It has long been my passion to inspire women to do more and be more,” Baaba J wrote on Twitter.

The Ghanaian singer and songwriter’s music will be listed as an EQUAL Africa artist on the EQUAL Africa and EQUAL Global playlists, which features her single ‘Been Thinking’. She joins the campaign’s alumni, which include Nigerian stars such as Tiwa Savage, Amaarae, Ayra Starr, Aṣa, Gyakie, Somi, DBN Gogo, Yemi Alade, Fave, Soraia Ramos, and Sio.

For Baaba J: “Writing music makes her happy.” Her wonderful blend of soul, pop, rap and alte under the Afro umbrella sets her apart from her peers. She performs in English, Pidgin and Ga, weaving message heavy tales that celebrate individuality, originality and freedom. She wants to show people they “can be unconventional and still achieve their goals.”

In 2020, Baaba J released Lumumba Street – a 5 track EP which served as the music community’s official introduction to her brilliance. The project’s lead single, Tomboy, whose video she co-directed is a tale of being confident in one’s self and one’s choices. She followed it up with Lovin 21, a celebration of her turning 21. She has delivered stellar performances on platforms such as Accra Indie Film Festival, The Crusade & The MiM Life Concert.

The EQUAL initiative aims to provide female musicians with the resources and assistance they need to boost their careers and engage with audiences around the world via various playlists. The recipients also receive off-platform coaching and resources to advance their musical careers even further. It is part of the streaming platform’s Equal Hub, which was launched in commemoration of International Women’s Day to extend the company’s global commitment to fostering gender equality in the music industry and supporting female artists.
