Promoting African Music Through AFCON

Africa’s biggest football platform, the ‘African Cup of Nations (AFCON 21) commenced yesterday 9th January 2022 in Cameroun and as expected different people from different countries are to converge to cheer their countries on to win the African cup.

All eyes are on Africa at the moment and we can use this opportunity to promote most of the things that define us as Africans. Our food, our fashion, and especially our music are what Africans need to project more to the foreign world aside from football.

Most times before the AFCON musicians are gathered from all over Africa to compose a song that comes with a promotional video.

I believe a lot more can be done to promote music from the continent through this tournament. Because people from all parts of the continent converge in one country, a music festival can be organized where artists from different countries share a stage to entertain their fans. This can give them some exposure, (even though they might be popular) putting new fans on their music.

Also at halftime of some intriguing games, an artist or artists could perform to build up momentum towards the second half of a game.

It’s high time we capitalize on certain things once the spotlight is on us so we can promote ourselves. Africa for long has been pictured as a ‘poor’ continent and it’s time to show the world what we possess.
