The nominees for the 2021 Nigerian Entertainment Today (NET) Honours People’s Choice Awards have been announced ahead of the main ceremony on 20 June. Singer Simi leads this year’s nominations with six, followed by Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy who have four nominations each. Bovi, Sydney Talker, Mr Macaroni, Taaooma, Broda Shaggi and Josh2Funny scored a nomination each in the “Most Popular Comedian” category.
“NET Honours is unique because it is solely based on online audience engagement data that was recorded by Netng and its sister platforms for the year,” ID Africa CEO Femi Falodun said. “The diversity of categories and nominees paints a good picture of the personalities and conversations that Nigeria’s youth population truly cares about. These are useful insights for brands and businesses trying to understand consumer behaviour, media trends and pop culture.”
Organised by the ID Africa-owned Netng news organisation, the awards celebrate top performers in Nigeria’s entertainment space. The organisers say the scheme is based on engagement from more than 8 million internet users on websites, social media and email newsletter channels of Netng and its affiliates including Neusroom, 234Star and Orin.
This year’s awards will follow a digital format due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and will recognise 100 achievers in 25 categories, including newly introduced categories that will honour the most played Nigerian songs. Works released between June 2020 and May 2021 were considered, and the winners will be announced via the Netng’s official website(link is external) and social media platforms.
