Tems wins “Best Collaboration” at 2022 BET Hip Hop Awards

The winners of the 2022 edition of the BET Hip Hop Awards were announced at a ceremony that was taped at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta on September 30 and aired exclusively on BET on the morning of October 5.

Tems, the only African winner at the event, won in the “Best Collaboration” category for her collaboration with Future and Drake on “Wait For U.” The song was nominated for Song of the Year as well but lost to Latto’s “Big Energy.”

Elsewhere, in the Best International Flow category, other African contingents: Black Sherif (Ghana), Blxckie (South Africa) and Nadia Nakai (Zimbabwe) lost to French rapper Benjamin Epps, while Burna Boy, who was nominated for Video Director of the Year category for ‘Last Last’, lost to ‘Family Ties’ by US rapper Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem.

Meanwhile, Tems was also honoured with a BMI Impact Award at a ceremony held at the Savoy Hotel in London on October 3. According to Music In Africa, she was recognised for her influence on music, joining other young innovators like Raye and Arlo Parks, who have been previously awarded the accolade by the UK-based performance rights organisation.
