The chronicles of the demise of global football icon: Christian Atsu

On Monday, February 6, 2023, a devastating earthquake got Turkey claimed over 1,880 lives.

The world came to terms with what was happening in Turkey and lots of efforts were made by the Turkish rescue team to save many lives.

Ghana winger Christian Atsu, who played for the Turkish club Hatayspor was among the victims that were trapped under the rubble

In his final game, the night before the quake struck, the Ghanaian football star scored a wonderful last-minute winner from a free kick for Hatayspor.

Some days after the earthquake, it was announced that Atsu was found alive and he is receiving treatment from the medical center until the hopes and prayers of Ghanaians were flashed on February 18 when his body was found under the rubble of the 11-storey building he resides.

It became a very disheartening moment for the fans of the Ghanaian footballer, his family, and the world at large to hear of his demise.

Christian Atsu was known to have interest and engagement in charity given

Atsu was known for regularly donating football jerseys and football boots to clubs in Ghana and was well renowned for his philanthropic deeds.

On February 19, a brief ceremony was made to receive the remains of the late Atsu from Turkey at the terminal 2 VIP section of the kotoka International Airport.

President Akufo Addo and his vice president, Mahamadu Bawumia described Atsu’s seat as a national loss and that he will be missed dearly

Dr. Bawumia disclosed that the late Christian Atsu will be given a befitting burial.

However, some former Black stars players visited the family house of the late Christian Atsu to sign the book of condolence opened in memory of the late legend.

Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari, Agyeman Badu, and Hamins Dramani were all present at the family house of Atsu in the early hours of Tuesday.

The government has vowed to fully engage with the family in giving Atsu a proper state burial.

On March 4, 2023, the deceased footballer will be remembered with a one-week memorial observation at Adjiringanor in Accra.

Meanwhile, the family has shown appreciation to the government and Ghanaians for the affection and support shown to them in the wake of the tragic passing of their relative in the devastating earthquake in Turkey.
